Birthday Realization
I do not usually give my birthday much attention for the past few years. As I grew older, the more jaded I have become with these repetitive dates. I remember being reminded by my mother; and to my surprise, I forgot my birthday completely.
This year was almost the same: I knew that my birthday was near only when my mother told me a week and a half ago. I did not prepare for it and thought least on how it should be celebrated.
For the past days however, I have received overwhelming greetings from my family, from friends old and anew, from acquaintances and strangers [thanks to friendster, yes]. And people exerting effort to greet somebody is something I truly value. Honestly, I somewhat feel awkward when people greet me. As a friend put it, it is simple selfishness–’self’-ish–being full of myself that I do not consider and cannot celebrate with people caring for me. Yet, other people anticipating my birthday more than I do is a thought-provoking and humbling self-assessment.
Hmm…. If others celebrate my birthday, maybe I should too.
